Charleston, SC’s Emily Curtis and Vancouver Canada’s Carson Hoy team up to bring nostalgic RnB and Pop fans the next backyard party song of the summer

CHARLESTON, SC (May 3, 2022) -

At the height of lockdown in 2020 Emily Curtis reached out to fellow musician friend, Carson Hoy to discuss a cowrite. The two quickly became friends in 2018 in Nosara, Costa Rica on a songwriter retreat called Neverland Retreats, founded by music sync licensing experts and producers Adam McInnis and Sam Heights. Fast forward to the spring of 2020 in the midst of the pandemic far away from the tropical Costa Rican jungle, Curtis and Hoy hopped on a Zoom call. Naturally finding themselves reminiscing on both old loves and summer gatherings “The Background” was born.

“It’s the perfect mix of being flirty, while taunting your ex that maybe left you and now can’t get over you,” Curtis says, “It almost puts a positive spin on being dumped.” Sassy phrases such as “I’ll be playing in the background” and “You can’t turn me down”.  contrast with lines like, “The song that I hate to love” sung from the perspective of the other side. “Sometimes memories of an old flame come up at the most inconvenient times” Curtis says, “Just got to acknowledge the feelings and keep dancing.” Written to show both sides of a breakup in a more comical way, “The Background” will have us swaying to the punchy beat all summer.
